Phoenix

An angry man walks into a bar, If I Ever Feel Better is playing in the background and the man looses control of himself and breaks out dancing. Pardon me if you thought that set up was for a joke, because it was not. Since that didn’t make you smile, try listening to Phoenix.

Phoenix is a four-man funky/disco pop band from La France. Their guitarist Laurent Brancowitz was part of the band Darlin’ with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, the men who eventually became Daft Punk (helping explain that funky sound they produce).

The two songs featured come from the same album, UNITED. So click below to listen to them, hopefully they will make smile, or break out dancing. enjoi

Let’s Pretend

MGMT

Let’s pretend this site has been around for 500 years. In that time I would have shared Italian Opera, French Opera, Christian Choirs, Symphonies, then have moved into Jazz, Ragtime, experimental, Blues, Rock & Roll, Rap etc. Sadly most of those earlier ones you wouldn’t want to hear. No Gorecki, Ives, Desprez, Orff, Barbers etc. Of course we know that over time things change.

Take Time to Pretend by MGMT. The song is about life in general and making the best choices for yourself, not ending up with “jobs in offices, and wak[ing] up for the morning commute.” 500 years ago trying to convince your parents that you’ve “decided that plowing the fields is hard labor, and you prefer painting anyway,” would have gotten you beat… brutally. Things change; now you would get sent to time-out.

A beauty in our modern times is our ability to lead any profession in the pursuit of happiness (B.F.). Life is very easy now compared to half a century ago. You can still become a ‘productive citizen’ by researching vital new corn oils for potato chip companies or you can work that fabulous profitable desk job brainstorming new ways to sell red meats into Indian markets. (lol no hippie, corporate hate intended) In the end, do what you want and do what you love, that is the song. Enjoi

Solta O Frango

Bonde Do Role

‘Solta O Frango’ is everything a summer tune should be. Dancey without sliding into crashing house or any of its siblings, incorporating the bouncy, not exactly subtle sounds of the Brazilian culture, the song sends your toes wildly tapping with the carnival-esque spirit that Bonde Do Rolê bring to the proceedings.

Digital Spy

Bonde Do Rolê is a very fun band. Most of their music is jumpy and energy, always playful and clubby which comes to no surprise since their name roughly translates from portuguese as “Joyride Trolley.” The Marina Ribatski, is known for onstage energy and sexuality. ”Release the Chicken” or “Solta O Frango” is the song, enjoi it.

Life of the Party

Jackson 5 picture

Face it. You’re itunes collection is missing something. Something that tells women “I know you want to sing along to this *wink” or better, “I enjoy getting giddy like a school girl, on occasion.”

This is where the Jackson 5 steps in. In case you’ve been hiding out on Antartica your entire life, The Jackson 5 is the band that introduced Michael Jackson, the black one. Back before classics like Thriller, a young Michael Jackson played lead vocals for the “bubblegum soul” group with older brothers Tito, Jackie, Jermaine, (*Randy live on congas), and Jermaine LaJuane, all as back vocals and instrumentals.

Their popularity soared at the end of the Civil rights era when they became the first black teen idols to appeal equally to white audiences. A sign of the power of the unity music creates. “I Want You Back” was written by Motown record’s specialized ghost writers, The Corporation, and was performed by the Jackson 5. It remains as probably their most popular song. “Life of the Party” is a funky word to the wise you can use every now and then, to show off your amazing break-dancing moves. So here’s what your Itunes has been missing, now feel free to close your bedroom door and DANCE.
