No they do not make cheat notes, summaries or sell books. Cliff Nobles & Co. are a funk/soul group from the late 60’s. This song is wonderful, not only thanks to the energetic instrumentals, but also because of its realistic understanding of what love is.
It seems like a lot of music does such a great job at romanticizing love (sounds strange right?), turning it into a superhero which always arrives at the nick of time and saves everyone! Not so much in the real world. Love is Alright. Enjoi.

Monkees

MonkeesHave you ever been cruising in a rocket ship past clouds and satellites only to reach a moon, that is in fact NOT COVERED IN CHEESE?? Of course it’s devastating, but so is realizing that you were daydream during an exam!

Daydreaming is how you save a mundane morning at school or work. Whether taking down pirate ships single-handedly or simply taking a walk with a lover down your favorite beach, daydreaming provides a safety net from insanity.

The Monkees are a very cool band that actually first existed as a cast in a popular 60’s TV show about a make-believe band (guess the name of that band!) That make-believe band was successful on the TV and thus was transformed into a real touring band by the members themselves. The Monkees had a bunch of hits including “I’m a Believer” (yes the song from Shrek) and even manage to sell more records in 1967 than The Beatles and The Rollingstone combined! Hopefully this song will remain as memorable as Shreks. Enjoi

Caetano Veloso

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

If you read the Gal Costa post, you might remember the founder of the Tropicalia movement being a fella by the name of Caetano Veloso. I won’t say too much about him in this post. But I’ll just quickly share a favorite funky songs by him.

Wendy Rene

Yet another sample worth song. Oh wait, it’s already been sampled? by RZA from Wu Tang? DAMNIT.

Today’s funky song is a Wendy Rene sample-worthy After Laughter. Although I like Wu Tang and can relate with all the white people that like them too, RZA’s version just does not do this song justice. The rapping is wu-tang, but the beat is just decent. I want this song to be re-did, by MSTRKRFT or JUSTICE. I’m kidding, probably KanYe West would do a decent job.

This song is good due to the fact that she sounds like any second she’ll break out sobbing and balling. Instead she manages to finish the song in a little over 3 minutes and probably walks it off (like my father would say). With that, enjoi. :’(

Vanilla Fudge

You really don’t want me, but you keep me hanging on

Posting this one for old poster Alan, he got out the kitchen haha since we all know how that saying goes (haha). This is perhaps the best cover of this song I’ve heard, over Wilson Pickett’s, Rod Stewart’s, Reba’s, Anca’s techno crap, and that crappy 80s Kim Wilde Version. You don’t have to agree. But once you take a listen you’ll realize how soulful and powerful this song is at this tempo. Everything is better slowed down, if you don’t believe me look up Dave Chappelle’s skit. Enjoi

David Axelrod. heard of him?

David Axelrod

Want to hear something awesome? This is a song you’ve probably heard 700 times. You probably wow every time you hear it, and you jam to it in your car before work, before going out, or even sometimes rap the lyrics to it in the shower. I’ll give you hint, Dr. Dre.

I’ll let the obscure David Axelrod speak for himself about sampling. This is the live version of the original song whose sample you’ve heard plenty of times. The bonus song is another one that was sampled by Dj Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World.

Ray Charles

I was blind, but now I see

This is by far my favorite version of this song of all the ones I’ve heard. Probably the first times you heard this song it lasted a little over 10 minutes due to singers improvisations, unnecessary additions, and praise jesus-zisations(!).

But what virtuoso singers must not realize is that simplicity is key. As we’ve all realized with the recent rise in Apple computers vs. Microsoft OS running ones, Pancakes vs. Waffles, cubes vs. Tesseracts and other forms of minimalism over the complex; simplicity IS KEY!

Ray Charles does not run around the notes or hold them longer than they need to be held, Ray keeps his eyes on the prize, no pun intended, and makes his wonderful scratchy voice work with the music. So enjoi the violins, the cellos, and the timpanis, take it all in one note at a time.

And try to picture Ray without his mouth wide open, smiling! It’s impossible!
