Chromeo, Momma's boy

Let’s take this next one all the way back to now.

Chromeo’s chirping apegiators, clean drums, and humorous instrumentals and lyrics makes this band a funky and functional duo. P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel), on keyboards, synthesizers, and talk box, and Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) on guitar and lead vocals have been best friends since childhood. They pride themselves as being the only successful Arab/Jewish collaboration since the beginning of time.

The duo’s chemistry is great, creating seriously outrageous tracks like Momma’s Boy and Fancy Footwork. Their music is funky, clean cut with only essential chirps, dings and buzzes that encourages at least a little head bop if not a full dance routine. If not, then let the themes to every song put a smile on your face. enjoi

Secret Agent Caribou

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Caribou is like The Shins stabbing at an electrical socket over and over again..

The sound is a whimsical skip through the industrial side of town owed to the fresh vocals and grimy backgrounds. Caribou’s music is jolting, managing a new stunning sound track after track, almost like lightning strikes on a cloudy night. I could keep going with the metaphors and similes, but you get the point. It is good music.

Caribou is one man (except on tour) Dr. Daniel Victor Snaith, a mathematician with an excellent ear. Enjoi

Ps. Sometimes I play Niobe on my Ipod and pretend I’m a secret Agent…

Let’s Pretend

MGMT

Let’s pretend this site has been around for 500 years. In that time I would have shared Italian Opera, French Opera, Christian Choirs, Symphonies, then have moved into Jazz, Ragtime, experimental, Blues, Rock & Roll, Rap etc. Sadly most of those earlier ones you wouldn’t want to hear. No Gorecki, Ives, Desprez, Orff, Barbers etc. Of course we know that over time things change.

Take Time to Pretend by MGMT. The song is about life in general and making the best choices for yourself, not ending up with “jobs in offices, and wak[ing] up for the morning commute.” 500 years ago trying to convince your parents that you’ve “decided that plowing the fields is hard labor, and you prefer painting anyway,” would have gotten you beat… brutally. Things change; now you would get sent to time-out.

A beauty in our modern times is our ability to lead any profession in the pursuit of happiness (B.F.). Life is very easy now compared to half a century ago. You can still become a ‘productive citizen’ by researching vital new corn oils for potato chip companies or you can work that fabulous profitable desk job brainstorming new ways to sell red meats into Indian markets. (lol no hippie, corporate hate intended) In the end, do what you want and do what you love, that is the song. Enjoi

Dj Fresh

Have you ever heard of Dubstep? if you do comment with your favorite Djs or mixes.

I won’t go into detail because wiki can help you with that but it is basically dark Electronic music with heavy bass. If you’ve played GTA 3 you might remember the Yardie radio station with some jamaican DJ talking over the music; that’s dubstep. Dubstep is that blood pumping ball of energy in you that explodes when the beat drops sending you into a crazy delirious trance. Just the name sound hard as f*ck, DUBSTEP! haha Enjoi batti boi.

Ps. Sit around for the 1.27 beat drop if it’s too much for you.

Collapsing at your Doorstep

Air France

It’s all like a dream, no better

It repeats again and again, sit through the repeating children talking over the violins, let the flutes flutter, the chimes chime, and the percussion percus… This is a pretty chill summer song, because for some reason only thoughts of the beach pop into my head. The violins sift in and out like the ocean’s surf, children sit around conversing (not really saying anything, just repeating the same 2 phrases), and birds chirp and whistle in the background. This song is a lot like a dream, no better. enjoi.

Cut Copy, Paste

Cut Copy

In the world of happy electro music exists one superhero. His name is Paste. Evil do-ers beware, his hypno electro-happy sound beams will have criminals boucing up and down from sun up to sun down, except on Hanukkah and American general elections, because he’s Jewish.

Paste is not a real crime fighting Superhero, but Cut Copy’s music is. It is electrifying, energetic and essential in every music library, or hypno-sound beam shooter. The Aussie electro band first came together in 2003; before that, Cut Copy existed as singular DJ Dan Whitford’s musical project. Both their albums, Bright Like Neon Love and their newer album In Ghost Colours, are must-haves for any person who enjoys bopping around like a crazed lunatic. So enjoi this, or go f*ck a gator mate!

M83

‘It doesn’t make sense’ is what some of you might think while listening to this song. ‘There’s no point to listening to this, it’s not saying anything,’ ‘It’s not much at all.’

But it is. With the absence of the basic instrumental structure (i.e. Lyrics, Instrument, Drums) and song structure [intro, [verse+chorus]x2, outro] our world is sent into mass turmoil. The only way a band can be held credible by the masses is by following that basic pattern. This in turn leaves no room for the creation of the novel and truly original.

M83 owes it’s name to an entire galaxy, almost as a metaphor to the limitless feeling created by the layers of sound in every single track.

Bringing together their creation of music and creationism, “In Church” results. It is a god-fearing, four-minute rendition of your captivation with mass. If attend church, you’ll know, If you don’t, play the song, close your eyes and enjoi. I know you still haven’t closed your eyes.

Electro Haze

Does it offend you, yeah? picture of band

A skunky strain of electro that has the same grind and crash as The Chemical Brothers while boasting all the finesse (and by “finesse” I mean “vocoding talent”) of Daft Punk.  That’s the best way I can think to describe this group.  I’m not typically a fan of this sort of music.  It’s rather a shallow indulgence, being an exploitation of the Italo disco our generation never got to know, repackaged and served to us on shiny new iPods instead of the worn out turntables they were originally popularized on, but let’s be honest; the lyrics are pleasingly straightforward and you can take the beat straight to the face.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? hails from Great Britain, on the very edge of the Europe where Electro and New Wave music remains popular despite a mainstream decline in North America.  Though composed of four members, bassist James Rushent is generally regarded as front man and is technically the foundation of the bad.  As nephew of Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo fame, Rushent was exposed to New Wave music at a very young age and explored it back to its roots in Electro music.  Though he’s taken a more sullen, British direction than his American uncle, Rushent and Mothersbaugh have cooperated to record a cover of Devo’s “Whip It” for NME and are currently in Mothersbaugh’s Mutato Muzika studios working on music for the upcoming Rugrats feature film.
