The Last Shadow Puppets

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Every few months a song comes out that grabs you by the balls (or vagine) and holds you there with your eyes peeled back, and your face in paralyzed, for the two minutes and twenty one seconds it plays for. This is that song. Standing Next To Me is a that beautifully done song I wish I had the words to describe, but not even words could do it justice. So read up on the Last Shadow Puppets HERE and enjoi.

Summer with Miami

Miami

It’s hot out. Summer is like that aunt you like having over for a week, any more time than that and she becomes annoying. If you do not live near any large body of water, or if you do not have a working air conditioner, i feel for you. Summer days are bad, but you know cool summer nights are much better.

Summer with Miami is just that, a cool, summer-night drive down South Beach. The song is a slow, inebriated ride past swirling, neon-lit Art deco hotels. Even if you haven’t been to Miami, this song was made for the summer night so you can still relate. enjoi DIPSET! AY!!

Coldplay

You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn’t mean you’ve won
‘Cause along may come
A bigger one
And you’ll be lost

Off Coldplay’s new album Viva La Vida comes Lost, probably a favorite off the new album. In case you do not have it, get it, that’s implying you already know who Coldplay is. If you do not then try songs like Clocks, In My Place, Yellow, The Scientist, or Violet Hill since you’re bound to recognize one. Feel free to share your favorite Coldplay song in the comment area.

Blonde Redhead

Listening to Blonde Redhead is like discovering your own world.

They are one of those strange bands that sound great at any volume. Their sound is eerie, and yet very calming. The band of three, Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace, has been around for a good amount of time, having assembled the same year Snoop Dogg released Doggystyle (in case we’re on the same timeline).

Their two most recent CDs 23 and Misery is a Butterfly I find to be their best because their soft vocals and noisy background have developed as a part of their style. Maybe it’s because I love songs where the bass plays eighth notes in the background; it gives them that speedy, racing-down-the-highway feeling (Apparently they do not have a full time bassists either). Send your resumes to them and enjoi.

After Laughter

Wendy Rene

Yet another sample worth song. Oh wait, it’s already been sampled? by RZA from Wu Tang? DAMNIT.

Today’s funky song is a Wendy Rene sample-worthy After Laughter. Although I like Wu Tang and can relate with all the white people that like them too, RZA’s version just does not do this song justice. The rapping is wu-tang, but the beat is just decent. I want this song to be re-did, by MSTRKRFT or JUSTICE. I’m kidding, probably KanYe West would do a decent job.

This song is good due to the fact that she sounds like any second she’ll break out sobbing and balling. Instead she manages to finish the song in a little over 3 minutes and probably walks it off (like my father would say). With that, enjoi. :’(

KLAXONS!!!

The Klaxons made 2007 spectacular.

For some reason I came across the Klaxons at the same time they released their album Myth of the Near Future. Being a fan of another similar kick ass English band Hadouken!, love for the Klaxons came easy. Their music is loud, stretching from creepy to moving in a heart beat. Every song makes you want to fight ninjas and clowns in slow motion. It’s the soundtrack to the Action hero’s life.

If you’re not an action hero, then jump around and pretend to be one (because god knows silliness is essential to a healthy aging). The Klaxons music puts life back in your life (sorry for the cliche) and, played loudly, can help soothe redundancy, awkwardness, boredom, and fatigue. Dr. Frank says enjoi.

Vanilla Fudge

You really don’t want me, but you keep me hanging on

Posting this one for old poster Alan, he got out the kitchen haha since we all know how that saying goes (haha). This is perhaps the best cover of this song I’ve heard, over Wilson Pickett’s, Rod Stewart’s, Reba’s, Anca’s techno crap, and that crappy 80s Kim Wilde Version. You don’t have to agree. But once you take a listen you’ll realize how soulful and powerful this song is at this tempo. Everything is better slowed down, if you don’t believe me look up Dave Chappelle’s skit. Enjoi

SparkleHorse

What’s good with these lyrics?

This song is by Sparklehorse a group led by Mark Linkous. The album from where this song was taken, Good Morning Spider, was the result of an ”anti-depressants, Valium, alcohol, and heroin” overdose. The overdose left him unconscious for 14 hours with his legs pinned beneath him. The resulting potassium [K] buildup was enough to stop his heart once he was moved. After countless surgeries Mark Linkous nearly lost his legs and couldn’t walk for a long time.

Wow, so Here’s the song. enjoi

Secret Agent Caribou

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Caribou is like The Shins stabbing at an electrical socket over and over again..

The sound is a whimsical skip through the industrial side of town owed to the fresh vocals and grimy backgrounds. Caribou’s music is jolting, managing a new stunning sound track after track, almost like lightning strikes on a cloudy night. I could keep going with the metaphors and similes, but you get the point. It is good music.

Caribou is one man (except on tour) Dr. Daniel Victor Snaith, a mathematician with an excellent ear. Enjoi

Ps. Sometimes I play Niobe on my Ipod and pretend I’m a secret Agent…

Queen Latifah

Back before she was Living Single, Bringing Down the House, or living the Perfect Holiday, Queen Latifah was murkin the mics.

This bass heavy song Just Another Day is a walk through a black and white New York City during summertime. Young’uns playing in the streets, chicos chilling on stoops, busy bodegas buzzing with ice-craving-heat-hating customers (and that’s my imagination from just listening to the first verse).

Latifah is dangerous on this song. Her flow sounds rockhard and rugged the way she moves chumps off the side walk with a flash of her gun; she’s a character you don’t want to f—s around with. In this song she means business, just like she did her entire career. Back before anyone referred to her as a “plus-sized African American actress,” Queen Latifah was just a hood ass chick with an attitude. Enjoi
